IT support technicians help maintain the ability to use information technology (IT) hardware assets of a company or organization. In many situations, this means working with desktops and laptops to ensure they work according to the needs of company employees. They work with employees to help solve any hardware operation problems so that employees continue to work at the optimal level. In sophisticated IT activities, supporting technicians also ensure that mainframes, server-side computers, and related technology remain online and functioning as intended.
Typically, computer support technicians spend most of their time working to ensure that any hardware or software updates are carried out in accordance with the company's IT protocols, and to ensure that computer operators in the company receive the necessary training. Supporting technology acts as a support desk for organizational employees and helps resolve hardware and IT complaints. Supporting technicians must also carry out routine repairs and maintenance on company equipment. When new technology is available, they must carry out an efficient installation of this new equipment and facilitate every training needed for employees who will use it. Assistive technology usually works in an office environment during normal business hours; however, large-scale upgrades and installations sometimes require night or night work.
Educational requirements for this position usually include relevant post-secondary education, usually from an engineering college. It is also possible that computer support technicians must have certifications for various software and operating systems used by the company.
